If you’ve just arrived in Madrid, this is one of those small decisions that can quietly shape your experience.
Do you grab a taxi, or open Uber or Cabify?
The honest answer is… it depends on the journey.
For airport transfers and longer trips
If you’re heading to or from the airport, it’s worth quickly checking Uber or Cabify.
Madrid taxis have a fixed airport fare of €33 to or from the city centre. That’s simple and predictable, but sometimes ride-hailing apps can come in cheaper, especially at quieter times.
So for longer journeys, it’s always worth a quick comparison.
For getting around the city
This is where things change.
For most short journeys in central Madrid, the price difference between a taxi and Uber or Cabify is usually only a couple of euros.
And this is why we nearly always recommend taxis. Why?
Because they’re easy, immediate, and reliable.
You’ll see them everywhere, just look for the green light on the roof and you can wave one down in seconds, or pick one up from a taxi rank. No waiting. No wondering if your driver can find you down a small street.
And after a long meal, a few glasses of wine, or a full day exploring, that simplicity matters.
A few useful things to know about taxis in Madrid
- Taxis are relatively affordable compared to many other major cities
- All taxis accept card payments
- They run on a meter, with small surcharges depending on time of day, public holidays, or stations
- The airport fare is a fixed €33 to or from central Madrid
- Tipping is not expected, but always appreciated if the driver has been particularly helpful
One small tip, if you’re in a very pedestrianised area, it can sometimes be quicker to walk a minute or two to a main road where taxis pass more frequently.
What about availability?
Madrid is generally very good for taxis, but like any city, peak times can mean a short wait.
Uber and Cabify can also surge in price during these times, which is another reason we tend to favour taxis for everyday use.
Booking in advance
If you need a taxi at a specific time, for example an early airport transfer, the easiest option is to ask your hotel to arrange one.

So, what do we recommend?
If you want the simplest, most reliable option for getting around Madrid, take a taxi.
If you’re travelling further or heading to the airport, check Uber or Cabify first, you might save a few euros.
Either way, you’ll get where you need to go. And that’s exactly how it should be.
