Adventurous Appetites’ Bite-sized blogs: (1) Taxi or Uber/Cabify???

(Please find below the first in a new series of Adventurous Appetites’ Bite-sized blogs, designed to provide information and opinions that may be useful for visitors to Madrid.)

For longer journeys Uber/Cabify services are worth checking out as they can be cheaper. For example if going to the airport taxis have a fixed fee of 33€ so if uber/cabify is cheaper you are saving money, but FOR SHORT JOURNEYS WITHIN THE CITY the difference between an official taxi and another service will have a variation of a couple of euros on average, and we are fans of the hailing a green light taxi off the street or in an official taxi rank. In this way you will get a professional driver and are not waiting for a car to come to you (or not find you!). Also Uber/Cabify prices vary according to the demand at the moment of service whereas taxi rates are constant.

  • Taxis in Madrid are not expensive compared with other countries.

  • All taxis accept card payments

  • There is usually a good amount of availability for taxis in Madrid but please be aware that at peak times (as in any city) you may have to wait for one to appear. Because much of central Madrid is pedestrianised it can be worth walking to a busier thoroughfare.

  • Taxis work on a meter with the charge per min/km + appropriate surcharge according to the hour/public holiday/destination (station) etc

  • There is a flat fee for transfers to/from the airport from/to the city centre of 33€.

  • It is not the general etiquette to tip taxis unless they are particularly helpful and it is not expected by drivers.

  • If you have a specific time that you need to book a taxi for, we recommend asking your hotel reception to get you one or we have always received a reliable service from Radiotaxi +34 914475180.
